"Don't you dare" made me laugh ☺️

I love seeing your process in your art...thank you for sharing with us.

Wild places are my happy places. When we lived in houses and had gardens, we always had wild corners and edges. They made the gardens come alive. We saw the last house we had lived in recently, and I was reduced to tears...it had been completely razed...no more trees for the little birds to perch in, no long grasses for all kinds of insects to live in, and no wild flowers to feed the bees and butterflies and caterpillars.

Thank you for 'Grey Area' 💚

The Dandelions are having their moment in glorious sunny bloom, then full moon seed heads, soon to be stars floating away. We too have Bluebells; Lady's Smock, Wild Garlic, Three Cornered Leek, Gorse, Wild Mustard, Blackthorn has gone over, and Hathorn now paints our hedges creamy, blushing white. They all make me so happy.

Have a wonderful week. It is SUNNY...and wind free!

Thank you Helen, I enjoyed reading your thoughtful comment. Especially pleased to know you share my love of quiet wild spaces. Yes, I think the sun is here for a few days, at least. And suddenly nearly all the trees are green… enjoy your week x

Love your blue bells! Thank you for sharing works in progress. I appreciate seeing your work at different stages very much. It is definitely bluebell season here, the daffodils have all withered, and the first tightly closed tulip has pushed up. Last week I was so happy to see that one of the woodland plants that I put in last year had sent up pretty delicate flowers (sorry I don’t recall the name). Sadly, a few days later, a rabbit stopped by and chomped every single one of them! They must have been delicious.

Hello Cathy and I must say I am a bit envious of your flowers and life emerging Springlike - so far with our up and down temperatures we have a few lonesome crocus .. with the promise of tulips ! I appreciate you sharing your process and observations and enjoy how your natural hues never are muddy but reflect a beautiful nostalgia in your paintings

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Thank you Heather, oh how different climates can be - crocus time seems like weeks ago here. There will come a time when you have an abundance of flowers, I hope soon!

Always a splendid start to my Wednesdays, Cathy, so thank you once again! Here in Tokyo, the cherry blossoms are done and dusted and we've moved on to azaleas and rhododendrons. Seems earlier than usual. But then, doesn't everything? We have dandelions and towering daisies outside our front door, which is bang slap on a main road and lately tiny children have been stopping to pick them. Except one, whose grandad said, "Yes, yes, come on, keep going." He'd clearly had a fluster of a day.

(Also, "frilly" deserves many more outings than it gets. The frilly daffs are positively Barbara Windsor in their blousiness)

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Ha yes they are very Babs! They remind me now of a frilly swimming hat. I like the observation of the grandfather with the children. Enjoy your extra special Tokyo spring!

Your writing always lifts my soul! I love your bluebell painting. Do you make your collage by glueing the penguin pages onto a piece of paper? I like that there is typeface peeping through the painting.

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Many thanks and good question - I layer the paper and add extra pages/book paper on the reverse to make a sturdy-enough painting surface - so it’s all book paper.

I know what you mean about Instagram. I have taken to using the search list to find the people I want to follow. Some of the posts make me wonder how "the Algorhythm" thought I would want to see "that"!

I really appreciate seeing how you build your paintings. Now I know why they don't get muddy as mine do. Love the blue bells. Need to see if they can be found anywhere around here. In bloom at the moment are dogwoods, daffodils just starting to fade, lilacs, forget-me-nots, daisies, bearded iris and day lilies are pushing out buds and all the trees in our tiny woods are that crisp green that bleeds up into the atmosphere. I almost like it more than the Autumn colors. Almost.

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Thank you Marilee, I can see a lilac flowering from my window. It makes a car park just a bit more attractive! I know what you mean about spring colours and autumn hues - I love autumn the most but relish this time of year with fresh greens

I enjoyed seeing your process of building up your painting by layers, Cathy! 💕 I grew up doing oils and watercolours and acrylics have always felt odd to me. They dry so fast!

You paint a picture with words so well!

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Thank you Sheila, I appreciate your comment. And I should have said the painting is in gouache - I missed adding that info. Have a good week

HI Cathy, well, as Heather mentioned we are in the early stages of spring, warm yesterday with sun, cool and rainy today. We do have the occasional purple crocus, yellow coltsfoot in the woods and I noticed my rhubarb and chives starting to sprout up. So, spots of colour here and there. The frilly daffodils are lovely! As is your painting with your bluebells.

Cathy Cullis's avatar

Thank you Nora and I hope when spring eventually makes it the flowers will be inspiring

Good morning, Cathy. The sun is beaming and this week there’s a flush of colour everywhere. My friend and I are going to visit a village where there’s a green that’s bordered right round by cherry trees. It’s like being in Japan. My mum and I used to take my daughters every April to see them. Mourning the loss of my beautiful fritillary. They gave a show of splendour last year and for some reason are no more. Maybe the bulbs were eaten by mice. I love how you speak of the wild areas. Nature can take care of itself. I was observing how little purple flowers had tucked themselves into the crevice in a stone wall and thought, there you go…just like the lovely guillemot squeezes into a crack in the sea wall. Lovely poems and thoughts, Cathy. I love your current paintings and how they emerge. I’m smiling at you having to hold back from popping a bird in! Have a lovely day! Xx

I hope you have a wonderful day with the cherry blossom. Thank you for such a lovely, thoughtful comment Pauline, much appreciated x
